As its name may suggest, the dryer section's primary purpose is to dry the paper to its required moisture content. Drying is achieved by interweaving the paper through a long run of steam-heated cylinders that evaporate the moisture. Generally dryers will be accompanied by a felt system to improve the heat transfer from the driers to the paper by pressing the paper against the outer shell. To improve energy efficiency, dryer hoods are used to enclose the dryer sections to allow for increased drying rates.
