The press section dewaters, supports and transports the sheet that has been produced on the fourdrinier or other types of former and delivers the pressed sheet to the dryer section. The press dewaters the sheet by passing it between rolls that are nipped together along with a felt to capture the water expressed from the sheet.

Press Types:

• Roll Presses
• Suction presses with a through drilled suction roll shell to apply vacuum to the sheet while in the nip.
• Vented presses with a roll cover that is vented either by grooving or blind drilling the cover to provide open area for the water expressed in the nip to occupy.
• Shoe Press
• Shoe presses replace one of the press rolls with a concave shoe inside a shoe press blanket that matches the radius of the mating roll. Shoe presses are capable of applying higher loadings and achieve higher dryness levels due to the longer machine dwell time afforded by the shoe.
• Older shoe presses are of an open blanket style (original design); modern shoe presses are of a closed blanket style.
